One particular form of technological hooliganism I like to indulge in is
hooking 'vintage' terminals up to contemporary emulators - but only if
I don't have the 'vintage' computer available! Some examples:
(you can click on any image to see the high-resolution original)
DEC VT52 hooked up to serial port of PC running TOPS-20 under KLH emulator
under GNU/Linux.
LA12 Decwriter hooked up to serial port of PC running OS/360 under Hercules
emulator under GNU/Linux (nearest I could come to an IBM 1052 typewriter
console!)
IBM 3174-63R Establishment Controller, used to connect 3270 coax terminals
to mainframe via token-ring and SNA.
IBM 3174-23L Establishment Controller, used to connect 3270 coax terminals
to mainframe via ESCON, parallel (Bus & Tag) channel, or ethernet,
and to any system via ethernet and telnet/TN3270.
(telnet note: the latest and greatest 3174 microcode, version C6.4, allows
the 3174 itself to act as a telnet client. This is how it is possible to
telnet from a 3270 display without first logging-on to a mainframe)
IBM 3290 plasma display, with one session connected to MVS via 3174-63R.
IBM 3279 functioning as the Hercules 'HMC' - connected to 3174-23L, and
using telnet over ethernet to connect to PC running GNU/Linux, and starting
Hercules in the normal fashion.
IBM 3278 functioning as MVS 3.8 console - connected to 3174-23L, using
TN3270 over ethernet to connect to the console port of a Hercules session
running under GNU/Linux.
